Patriots build rally in the sixth to win Norwich’s home opener

NORWICH – Norwich held onto a two-run deficit until the top of the sixth inning when Binghamton’s offense was clicking, stringing together a few timely hits to run away with a 10-3 win over the host Purple Tornado in Monday’s contest.
Binghamton struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Norwich answered in their first at-bats of the game as Tanner Franklin scored on a JT Vinal double.
The Patriots added two runs in the second and another score in the third inning but once again the Tornado responded to the second inning rally, tacking on one run to make the score 5-3.
Both teams saw four batters step up to the plate in the fourth inning with no runs scored. Norwich’s defense held Binghamton in the top of the fifth, sitting down three straight batters on infield hits to get the runner out at first.
The Tornado threatened in the bottom half of the inning when Eli Rodriguez had a lead-off single. He moved up to second on fielder’s choice then to third with a Kegan Wright single.
However, a strikeout for Dakota Franklin and a play by the shortstop to throw out Thomas Flanagan running down the line ended the chance for a score. Norwich left two runners on base during the stretch.
In the top of the sixth, the Norwich defense came out of the dugout flat and Binghamton took full advantage as they scored four runs in the inning. The Patriots added another run in the top of the seventh.
The bottom half of the inning ended with their defense getting all three Norwich batter who stepped to the plate out in order to end the game.
Jordan Jacquette started on the mound for the home team to pitch five innings, striking out three batter for Binghamton. Wright came on the in sixth inning to finish the game.
Zach Bell got the start for the Patriots, getting the win after four innings of work.
At the plate for the Tornado, Vinal led the team with two hits and an RBI while Wright was 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run scored. Franklin added a hit for Norwich and scored two of the three runs.
Norwich (0-2) looks to rebound as they head to Chenango Valley on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
